How would you like to save 2 lives for the holidays?

If you’re on my 2 Hearts Rescue list, then you’ve probably seen the story of this pregnant mare in a kill pen in Kansas. What does a “kill pen” mean? It means this horse went through an auction, and the highest bidder was a kill buyer. This buyer tries to find them a good home before he sells them to the shippers. These horses are then shipped to either Mexico or Canada where they are slaughtered and sold for the international horse meat market. (The USDA doesn’t fund inspections for horse slaughter in the US, rendering it basically illegal. So these horses travel hundreds of miles in cramped trailers before reaching the plant.)

This sweet lady is a 10 year old mare. She’s gentle, broke to ride, and happens to be carrying a foal due for delivery anytime. Have no idea what she’s bred to, and since my family opted to forego holiday gifts so we could do this, we’ll see what the “holiday gift” is when she delivers. Of course, I’ll update everyone.

As of this typing we’re at 40% of goal. (Check the 2 Hearts Rescue Series post for updates.) I’ve written about horse rescues, cowboys, and those who love horses. Now, I’m asking you, to please chip in if possible. Even a few dollars will go a long way! That’s how we got this far, donation by donation. I am certain we can raise the rest today or tomorrow if we all chip in.

Where does your donation go? Your donation will go directly toward paying her shipping and veterinary costs. Her bail has been paid thanks to donations over the last few days and a hefty “donation” from my own personal funds. We just need to get her from Kansas to Southern Missouri, and if you think postage rates are high, you should see how much it costs to ship horses! I’m looking at about $400 just to ship her, which is almost as much as I paid to bail her!
